Sunday Thoughts 9/14

What does the spider know of beauty?

When soft morning light spills over

The horizon and illuminates his

Intricate, dew-laden construction,

Is he even able to perceive

The beauty of his creation?

Likewise, when we scurry about

In our “ordinary” human lives,

Are we creating something

Beautiful that we can’t perceive,

But is, perhaps, on full display

To any being of a higher order?

  1. Wonderful philosophical poem and questions, Michael. We have sentience with varying levels and degrees of awareness in our human forms, truly miraculous lives indeed. Rich and poor, ‘good’ and ‘bad’, share a healthy love of Beauty, though clearly, not all of us do. Whether or not a spider web, such a practical creation, is appreciated for its beauty by the spider who created it is a very interesting question. I suspect spiders are crafters without ego or concept of beauty like us. We may dream of contact with alien lifeforms hoping for knowledge and understanding of them but we still don’t even understand ‘alien’ earth-life like spiders. No doubt there are more highly evolved beings in the cosmos who would find us beautiful, ugly, interesting, confusing, in our minds and our creations. I love your poem and photo.
