with epaulets of scarlet and gold,
the blackbird’s a sight to behold;
his black wings sure ‘pop’
with red patches on top,
and he looks like a cop on patrol.

we have rivers here up north
that appear to be sky blue,
but underneath their ripples
they are amber thru and thru.
they pick up many minerals
as they cross our iron range–
here, mother earth’s a hardy gal
with iron in her veins.

in the dark of night
our worries only double
upon reflection

eagles seize the trees
bending limbs like heavy fruit–
still, stoic judges

as winter shed her overcast
the sun began to show
and suddenly a tuft of grass
appeared amid the snow
the withered blades lay all askew
like soldiers in defeat
but as the yellow army grew
the snow began retreat
soon winter all across the land
could hold the ground no more
and even snowmen turned and ran
for spring had won the war

now when my
daughter’s kids show up,
it’s just like
they’re my own–
‘cept that when i’ve had enough,
i can send them home

the deadliest wild
creature in america
is… the gentle deer
deer cause hundreds of highway
fatalities every year

our souls are like swans–
often seeking sustenance

i had a crazy dream–
donald trump had played a part:
he’d had a little stroke
and a massive change of heart
*
now all that he was worth,
he donated to the poor;
he cried for mother earth
and apologized for war.
*
he had a brand new plan,
and our country’s fate was changed–
and all because one man
had his ‘marbles’ rearranged.
*
soon it spread to other lands,
and peace accords were struck;
people everywhere joined hands
and shared the stroke of luck.
