Hypatia (archives)

O beautiful Hypatia

Of ancient Alexandria,

Prominent astronomer

And erudite philosopher,

They flayed your flesh

Down to your bones

With shattered shells

And sharpened stones;

The zealots thought

You blasphemed Christ,

And made you pay

An awful price.

The search for truth

Is often met

With violence

And tragic death.

  1. She died in the most tragic (cruel) way possible. Some of the things done in the name of Christianity go against what it teaches. The church (both Catholic and Protestant) have done some vicious things. It’s really sad the lengths fundamentalists will go to.

  2. A beautiful poem Michael! Lovely image too. Yes, she was an inventor of a device used by sailors to guide their way as well. If she’d agreed to marry and follow the rules of being a Christian wife, we probably know nothing about her at all.
