On Thin Ice

These ice fishermen are a crazy lot. Despite all the warnings of thin ice due to unseasonably warm weather, they insist on driving out on it and putting up their ice houses. They must have their fish!

On Lake of the Woods, one person has drowned already, and over forty others had to be rescued by boat when the ice broke off from the shore and floated away.

On Red Lake, it’s even crazier; a plane and several vehicles have gone through the ice, and over a hundred eager fishermen had to be rescued. I love fish too, but not that much!

  1. We have those kind of crazies here too. Too soon. Too soon they’ll be fishing under the ice! Well, I soon learned years ago that ice fishing wasn’t a drink for me. My brother gave my son his ice auger and ice tent then my son gave the tent to some homeless people in town. I’m guessing they’re ice fishing the frozen lake now since authorities would move them along. Love your poem and photography Michael. Spot on. 🩵💙

      1. Lol! Don’t we all! Sometimes crazy is being eccentric, not following the trends or the crowd. Sometimes crazy is being brilliant, somehow ahead of the crowd. Sometimes crazy is being psychic, that step above reason and logic. Sometimes crazy is stupidity and lack of common sense. Sometimes the mind goes on holiday, leaving the body behind and open for just about anyone to be physical for a while. Perhaps some crazy fishermen have a few too many when they drink on ice to fish. Lol! 😂
