When I just can’t seem to put any words together on the page, I’ll put something else together on it, like this birch bark pick-up truck. It keeps the creative juices flowing through the dreaded writer’s block, and when the dam finally breaks, I’m ready to go.
Of course, good photos are the best inspiration for me, but this time of year it’s hard to get out in the woods, and now that we finally have an appreciable amount of snow, the options grow thin. Maybe I’ll go look for more birch bark.

Nice one, Michael. I saw a documentary once about a guy building a traditional birch-bark canoe. It’s a beautiful material to be working with.

yes, you can bend it and shape it; it’s almost like working with leather, depending on the thickness and moisture content of the piece. I made a canoe, also–about 6 inches long! Thanks, Michael.

I really like your birch bark creation Michael. I once made and sold birch bark gift tags. I also have birch bark earrings. I used to collect bark, moss, twigs, flowers, etc from the woods for DIY projects and for a while I saw $$ every walk in the woods making indoor decorative birdhouses and such. When the wellspring of words seem to stop for a while, we artistic creatives often pour out our creative energy in other fun ways. Have you considered making a little birch bark canoe as well? π€©π

I have, actually. The boat you can barely see in the top of the picture started out as a canoe, but I couldn’t leave well enough alone and now it’s a boat on a trailer! Thank you, Shelly!
