summer is coming
things will happen
fathers will dance
mothers will cry

“One must maintain a little bit of summer, even in the middle of winter.”
–Henry David Thoreau

a brief stillness comes
as summer hesitates to
give way to autumn

the summer came
it all happened again
just like every year
it all happened again
sixty-four times now
it happened again
much bigger than me
it happens again

summer has come
people will do things
mothers will cry

when tree blossoms fall
‘cross the freshly-cut lawn,
it’s a sure sign
that summer is near.
but wait! i believe
i can feel her now–
yup. summer is
already here!
* * *
summer’s so moody
invariably, she gets
here when she gets here

summer is the time for
weddings and wildflowers
new pets and new friends
romance and heartbreak
summer is the sound of
screen doors slamming
crickets and fireworks
thunder and pelting hail
summer is full of mischief
and la joie de vivre
but first and foremost
summer is potato salad

at dawn we watched the sunrise
splashing colors on the day
and when we got too hot
we swam the afternoon away
at dusk we danced in meadows
flecked with flashing fireflies
while zephyrs whispered secrets
under hazy azure skies
at night we told tall tales
as we sat beneath the stars
you were the goddess venus
and I the man from mars

we three were
a merry three
the sun
the wind
and me
we danced
with ease
upon a breeze
while daisies
bowed in
verdant leas
but then the
wind was
called away
and couldn’t
stay to play
one day
the sun and I
we really tried
to have some
fun beneath
blue skies
but soon
I found our
friendship
thinned
until at last
the truth
sunk in
the sun’s
a bitch
without
the wind
