our little mid-western
town was truly blessed
the day she was born
she had a rare beauty
inside as well as out
she was so ravishing
that the other girls
weren’t even jealous
it was beyond that
she made them proud
to be a friend of hers
proud that their gender
had produced such
an exquisite creature
her radiant smile
could reach right out
and cure any illness
every single person
that she had ever met
instantly loved her
hearts ached for her
shy boys would run off
when she floated by
her angelic radiance
enveloped our town
and everything thrived
but the day came when
she had to move away
out west to california
to where she belonged
and though life went on
in our mid-western town
it was never the same

I thought that I knew what now meant,
Till I used it to date an event;
Now my lingering friends
Claim that now never ends
But the now that I meant came and went!

first
best, blessed
starting, germinating, leading
a new-born’s breath
winner
&
last
worst, cursed
parting, terminating, ceding
a breath before death
loser

I pass an old pole
Each day without seeing it–
A beautiful pole!
There’s beauty in the mundane
That must be seen to be seen

i look for answers
in the universe, but i’m
always in the way

a band of boulders
are caught sneaking from the woods–

the constructs of man
the quickest of apes
arise from the ground
in arboresque shapes
betraying perhaps
the wishes he could
return to the trees
and trade metal
for wood

day
sunlit, stark
struggling, connecting, hurrying
playing to our facade
sunward
night
starlit, dark
snuggling, reflecting, worrying
praying to our god
starward

If I had been
Born long ago
There’s certain things
That I would know
viscerally
I would’ve felt
It all along
That slavery
Is cruel and wrong
absolutely
Men and women
I’d surmise
Are equal in
Their maker’s eyes
naturally
I’d stand upon
The highest ground
And I would know
That Earth is round
certainly
And standing there
Beneath the sun
I’d know that all
Of life is one
easily
