i awoke
in an old, abandoned school;
i didn’t
recognize the building itself,
but the old wooden floors
seemed oddly familiar.
i called
out for a teacher to help,
any teacher,
but they’d left long ago–
and i am yet a fool.
i walked
down a road, unpaved;.
i didn’t
recognize the road itself,
but i knew i’d been there.
i called
out for a god to help,
any god,
but they’d left long ago–
and i am yet unsaved.

not far
from its source,
the burgeoning force
of the great mississippi
is born,
yet here
there’s no mud,
no pollution, no flood–
just an endless display of
earth porn.

now winter arrives
in a flurry and promptly
erases the fall
