ecstatic when approaching,
sooooo sad when leaving

one night of the year
we mask our fears by making
light of the darkness

There once was a partridge named Dwight
Who would always stand guard at first light;
To observe the whole flock,
He would climb a big rock–
For there wasn’t a pear tree in sight

i’m sitting here watching a group
of both physically and mentally
challenged young children
sing their hearts out on one
of those talent shows on tv.
they get the golden buzzer,
and the audience explodes–
people are hugging each other,
mothers and fathers are crying,
and the children themselves
are beaming like sunlight
with honest-to-goodness
genuine happiness as they
dance around the stage.
tears run down my cheeks,
and for the moment, anyway,
i’m glad that i’m an empath.

i am a priest
in the temple
of the forest.
i go there now
seeking solitude
in the frosty morn.
the path of leaves
soon gives way
to a carpet
of golden needles;
i have reached
the inner sanctum.
here, great pillars
reach into the sky
opening a portal
between heaven
and earth

as an introvert
i feel a little
like the ripples
in a quiet stream
as compared to
the crashing waves
of extroverts
in rougher waters–
yet i know
that the world
needs us both

why first snow
is so alarming,
i’ll never
understand–
it makes my world a charming
winter wonderland

snow in the flowers
has all too quickly become
flowers in the snow

o mother earth
giver of all life
you wear your
jewel-encrusted
flowing blue robe
like a great queen
your shimmering
emerald auroras
crown your brow
with ghostly tiaras
you are a tiny isle
of life in a vast
ocean of death
you are a bright
sky-blue tv screen
in a pitch-black
living room
they say that those
who’ve seen your
sphere of life
against the utter
emptiness
of space are
forever changed
shatner cried

come along
don’t make a fuss
just hop aboard
the magic bus
and head out to
the woods with us–
we’re going to have
some fun;
there’s herbs
and mushrooms
everywhere
and wildflowers
for your hair–
the eager elves
and fairies there
already have
begun
