comet neowise, 2020
a comet
suddenly appears
and we feel
a bit odd
because everyone fears
the finger of god

The heron’s a little obsessed
With those feathers displayed on his chest;
They’re used all the time
For wiping off slime
That’s exuded from each dinner guest.

established foes don’t
know that they hate each other–
until they’re informed;
love is a natural thing
while hatred has to be learned

a train comes
with the dawn;
what either brings,
we don’t know,
except guiding light–

sit and wait
ten, nine, eight
feeling so alive
seven, six, five
i think of you

How can a man keep his lawn mowed down
Before it reaches the sky?
And how can a man spread the clippings around
Before he hears neighbors cry?
Yes, and how can a man simply mow his lawn
And kiss all that raking goodbye?
The answer, my friend, is mowin’ in the wind
The answer is mowin’ in the wind

a time, this fellow
flew to the
sun and back;
it turned his whole head yellow
but burned his face black

sandhill cranes
i see two feathered footballs
on legs like broken sticks;
i hear their lockstep footfalls
between their calls and clicks.
