It’s hard to believe how we’ve painted our god as someone in need of constant adulation. In fact, according to a certain religion, he demands that you sell your soul to him (under penalty of eternal torture for noncompliance–so much for free will) so that when the body he gave you can no longer keep praising him 24/7, your soul can still keep worshiping at his feet for ever and ever. Amen.

i went walking in the predawn light
(that twilight zone ‘tween day and night)
and there i found poems all around
just waiting for someone to write

the earth ‘takes up space’–
so perhaps gravity is
just space fighting back;
if you dare to take up space,
it’ll be coming for you.

the sun comes up
a river flows
the world turns
and so it goes
don’t lose the spell
you once were under–
recapture now
that child-like wonder
lest here today
a river flows
the world turns
and so it goes

all leaf-strewn footpaths
in the autumnal forest
lead to peace of mind

our minds are built unique
with a sole, subjective view;
you cannot see reality
the same way that i do.
some say that it’s a blessing,
some say that it’s a curse–
but every mind designs a kind
of homespun universe.

i have some choice words for my cat,
like messy and spoiled and fat,
and yet i would say
in the slang of today–
she’s also adorably ‘brat’
