I’m walking the Mesabi Trail;

up here, the hardwoods prevail.

Some maples are only now turning,

Though most of them look like they’re burning!

Once upon a time, there was nothing.
I mean, there was nothing but nothing.
In fact, there was so much nothing,
That that fact became something,
And once there was something,
It quickly exploded into everything.

all summer, the clouds had their fun,
but now there is much to be done;
in autumn, they race
at a feverish pace
past the featureless face of the sun.

come on now and walk with me

i’ll show to you the orangest tree

and forest friends, so wild and free–

these are things you gotta see!

unhappy
that the autumn brings
no colors
to the pines,
mother nature sometimes strings
them up in pink vines

some think they’re blessed
while you are cursed–
that they’re the best
while you’re the worst,
but blessed and cursed
will be recast
when last is first
and first is last.

when mining ended in the pit,
a path was made encircling it,

and near the path, a fence was strung,
and soon all kinds of plant life hung…

…upon the wire, all around–
now, even wild hops are found;

there are berries, plums, and apples, too–
all hanging there for me and you!

O little yellow bird,
The things you must’ve heard
While flitting ’round
Our little town–
And how you spread the word!

the bee is my brother
we’re one family
the wind is my sister
she calls out to me
the earth is my mother
i sprang from her womb
the sky is my father
he makes mother bloom

i’m droppin’ by here just to say
i hope that you have a nice day;
my tail’s a-swishin’
and my whiskers are twitchin’,
so something good’s comin’ your way.
