first bump
in the night
heart takes flight
panic creeps in–
what a fright!
second bump
of the night
turn on the light
lover walks in–
what a sight!
third bump
of the night
high as a kite
moons shine in–
what a night!

When I walked to the lake in the dale,
I was shocked by a snake, long and pale,
And I knew my old foe
Was but blue-tinted snow–
Yet I opted to break a new trail.

a young bald eagle
neither eaglet nor adult
mad at the whole world

We had crashed on
An alien world;
Now our ship was
Beyond all repair,
And though we had
Prayed for our rescue,
We knew we weren’t
Going anywhere.
Long after we’d
Made this our home,
A scouting ship
Answered our prayer,
And though we had
Prayed for our rescue,
We knew we weren’t
Going anywhere.

spray paints its delicate shores

it cost the great wolf
an arm and a leg to become–
a man’s wiener dog

auroras ahead
moonshine behind
starlight above
stirring my mind
waking at once
moving my hand
painting the pines
limning the land

My final sunset
Will also be somebody’s
Very first sunrise
I look at my granddaughters
And accept the greater scheme

with new storm windows
on our lakes, their white shutters
will soon be closing
