Outside the Lines

It may look like I’m taking this picture while standing in the middle of the river, but that’s because the riverbank of solid igneous rock (which takes up more than half of the shot) just happens to resemble the rushing waters.

I often see this in nature; one thing spills over into another. Perhaps Mother Nature is getting a little careless in her old age.

boundaries get blurred

whenever mother nature

paints outside the lines

Shot of the Day

Slowly, the massive, battle-scarred buck

Steps out of the woods and into my range.

It’s rutting season now, and his neck is

Grossly swollen with the thick muscles

He’s acquired by rubbing and scraping

His antlers on everything he runs into.

This one is a real scrapper, for sure,

All jacked up on male testosterone

And ready to do battle if necessary.

I line up my sights and take aim.

He hears the click and bounds away,

But it’s already too late–

I got my Shot of the Day.

Above the Fray

I like to keep my posts on the lighter side, but lately the news is a steady diet of death and destruction, and I’m stuffed. Sometimes I envy the birds flying free above it all.

it seems like almost every day,

there’s more bad news that comes our way;

it makes me want to spread my wings

and fly above the fray

home (archives)

we had crashed

on an alien world,

our ship was

beyond all repair,

and though we had

prayed for our rescue,

we knew we weren’t

going anywhere.

long after we’d

made this our home,

a scouting ship

spotted our lair,

and though we had

prayed for our rescue,

we knew we weren’t

going anywhere.

perfectly lost

upon the inspection

of his own reflection,

the gull was impressed

and called it perfection.

with no explanation,

he deserted his station

and followed his image

to an unknown location.

sometimes self-promotion’s

a powerful potion,

and soon the gull found

he was lost on the ocean.

tangled

the whole day you’ve been on the go,

and you really just want to lay low,

but the lines someone said

are still stuck in your head,

and your all tangled up in them so.

i beg you to please call on me,

and i’ll give you my love tangle-free;

i’ll help you forget,

and we’ll watch the sun set

together–the way it should be.

star girl (archives)

starlight falls out of the skies

and settles in her upturned eyes

she peers into the jeweled vault

until the sun begins to rise

an amateur astronomer

she knows the moons of jupiter

orion’s belt and saturn’s rings

she loves the stars like i love her

i hope someday she’ll love me too

but i will not obstruct her view

or take the stars out of her eyes

my love for her is tried and true
